It's a Thursday afternoon in Moon—a group of women gather around a table, a few dozen spools of yarn, knitting needles and almost-stitched projects in tow. Those in attendance eye a maroon-knit cap—how could you finish it, just-so, to resemble the photograph example? "I've never met a knitter I didn't like," said one member of the group. The Moon-are knitting club is a weekly staple at the township's public library. Knitters from surrounding communities come together each Thursday afternoon, and membership is decidedly inclusive: All you need is a spool of yarn. "We definitely talk about …
It's game time on a Tuesday evening at the Mooncrest Community Center. Students huddle around tables—homework assignments are polished up and put away for the day, traded in for board games and puzzles. Josh Blum, a student at Robert Morris University, mulls his next move in a chess game. "We come in and we'll help them with math and English stuff," said Blum, who has been assisting at the Mooncrest Center for several semesters of his tenure at RMU. "And then we hang out with them." More than 50 students attend the after-school program each week at the Mooncrest Community Center, a …
Sister Rene Procopio said the scene is enough to warm her heart. Procopio, director of the Mooncrest Community Center, gathered alongside parishioners from Moon's St. Margaret Mary parish and residents of the Mooncrest neighborhood Monday night for the center's regular dinner fundraiser at Hoss's Steak and Seahouse. "It's just overwhelming to see all these people here," said Procopio of the event. "And St. Margaret Mary has just been great." Every other month the center hosts the dinner at the Beaver Grade Road eatery, raising between $400 and $600 for the center's arts programs per dinner…
It's a pretty good place to be on a chilly Tuesday night. The coffee is flowing and a container of chocolate chip cookies are on the table -- the free food might lure someone in, said librarian Paul Antoline. "We're hoping the free food brings some people in," Antoline said. "We're hoping to bring in some Robert Morris students." Antoline heads the Moon Township Public Library's 20- and 30-something's book club. The numbers may be modest -- Antoline said about 6 people are regulars at the meetings each month, but the conversation is lively. The group meets once a month on Tuesday nights …
In the craft room at the Moon Township Public Library, stickers, glitter and beads are strewn across a table. A couple of teenage girls, armed with their favorite photos of family and friends, are gathered, piecing together scrapbooks with tape and glue. It's the perfect setting to talk about about family quirks or what happened today in French class. "We call it punk-rock scrapbooking because you can kind of do whatever you want," said teen service librarian Heather Panella. "Some scrapbookers can get really into it, but that's why we advertise this as 'not your mother's scrapbooking.' It…
It's been open for just a day now, and the place already smells amazing. After 20 years in the same Moon location, Hunan Chinese Restaurant unveiled its new digs today after closing its doors briefly last month. Hunan didn't move far -- the restaurant is located just a few doors down from its original location in the Thorn Run Plaza on Thorn Run Road. Restaurant manager Thelma Go, who has worked at Hunan since it opened, said the eatery will offer much of the same menu selection, but in a cozier space. She said the Moon staple wanted to move into a more intimate, updated setting for patrons…
