Vacant buildings and unused storefronts are eyesores, but an empty storefront can also be an opportunity. You don't need to be a commercial developer or city planner—or have money to invest in a business project—to have the next great idea.

This former gas station at 8000 University Boulevard, which the Golden Oil Company owns, has been vacant for quite some time and is available for lease. We want to hear your ideas: Patch wants to know what our readers envision for this space.

What business would benefit the Moon area community? How could this space better serve you and your neighbors? If you had it your way, what would you place in this building?

Share your thoughts, ideas and concerns in the comments. Tell us what your vision is for this Moon Township vacancy.

About this column: Patch solicits your ideas for Moon-area vacancies in this regular series. I think the new Sheetz should move in there not the old beer distributer that is a bad place to put it as for 5 Guys it's not big enough of a property there's one in Robinson that's close enough just like Wally World aka Walmart we don't need traffic nightmares here

You maybe right about the traffic and size for 5 guys. But you said the one in robinson is close enough.. What about the Sheetz right down the road from this spot, why place another one so close? What about a Ralleys/Checkers?

I'd like to see some sort of boutique or retail or something like a cafe. Somewhere other than a chain store. With Walmart coming here we need LOCAL BUSINESS.

Totally agree. For visitors arriving at the airport and staying on University Ave, this is one of the first things they see. yuck

I agree, but I did a search on the County Web site and it appears that the taxes were paid for the property in 2010, but not 2011. I had heard that the taxes are still being paid. It needs to go, prime land for good development. God know how many people are living in that rat trap. I have seen several rooms open in the summer time from the Eat-N-Park lot so I assume the homeless have taken shelter.

Yeah I'm tired of empty buildings and car dealerships. I'd like to see some kind of coffee shop other than Starbucks and the future Dunkin Donuts.

If homeless folk have taken shelter in the Rodeway Inn, where are the ministries to help them get their lives back on track or address mental health issues, especially if there are vets there????

A book store/coffee shop based on the Barnes and Noble setup. Moon library is always out of new releases and B/N in robinson is too far and too busy to run in for a good book.

Just a few comments...........
With Walmart coming down the road (ugh) in the future, I am surprised the parcel is still vacant. Of course, chances for a small business' success in the area will be severely dampened, once Walmart does open. I predict Kmart and Kuhns will close/relocate soon afterwards. That will leave Walmart open to buy the land and open another Sam's Club. But I digress..............
The parcel is too small for another Sheetz - not enough parking space. Actually, parking space for most uses is scarce there.
To answer a comment made earlier, Dunkin Doughnuts is set to open down the street in the former Taco Bell bldg. in mid April.
A contact of mine at Giant Eagle told me they approached the owner of this parcel long ago about putting the Get-Go there, but the owners turned their noses up at them, so the Get-Go is now operating down the road.
A dunkin Doughnuts spokesperson told me a similar story - lease terms were far from affordable.
Personally, I don't care what goes in there, just as long as it isn't another gas station, convenience store, or pizzaria.

Now that Chik Fil A (sp?) has proven the power of an anti boycott, let's plan now to boycott WalMart when it arrives and patronize local small businesses instead.

I have been looking to move my printing company to Moon Township from Robinson. I inquired about that building, but the asking price is 1.5 million! Way too much for that. I like the spot, but even with them leasing it now, it will be too expensive. Guess I'll keep looking!

Folks, let's be honest. The parcel is too small and too hard to get in and out of for any business to make a go of it. Think of the spot where Walgreen's sits. Before they bought adjoining properties it was a black hole for small business...Hardee's, Station Street Hot Dogs, Dunkin Donuts, some artisian bread place...and on and on. Might be best for the township to find a way to make it a green spot although it is way to expensive for that right now.

How about a floral shop or like someone said a coffeeshop, book store or boutique. Anything to improve that corner. Not another gas station. I'd like to add, that the area around Carnot Rd. (the old township dump) is a real eyesore as well as the gas station on the corner of University Dr. and Beaver Grade Rd. That needs to be cleaned up.
