Sound Off: The Worst Intersections in Moon

Ever get commuter's anxiety while driving through Moon Township? Sound off on the worst intersections.

The Thorn Run Interchange? Flaugherty Run and Brodhead roads, maybe?

You drive the streets of Moon Township and we want to know: Which intersection causes you the biggest headache?

A month ago, Moon Patch readers gave a resounding thumbs down to the newly revamped Ewing Road roundabout, but what about traffic in other areas of the township?

Where can your fellow Moon motorists find the most congestion? Which thoroughfare has the longest red light? Where do you avoid driving? Where do you spot the most fender-benders?

Now it's time to vent: Sound off, and tell us where the worst intersections in the Moon and Crescent area are.

First a few pet peeves:
- Roundabout is too small. It’s nothing more than a hairpin curve.
- The new traffic light at the intersection of Flaugherty Run, Hookstown Grade, and Moon Clinton roads near Unger Recreational Vehicles is a joke. For years and years that intersection got along just fine with 4-way stop signs. Now – I think because of Dick’s new office building – it has a traffic light. This light was first a hazard that caused accidents, and now it slows traffic down. What a waste of money.

OK, worse intersection in Moon is at Thorn Run Road Ext off the Parkway West across from the UPMC building. No need to explain why this intersection is bad. If you have to use it, you know why.

I agree, the worst has got to be the Thorn Run Road Ext exit off the Parkway. How about a traffic light there? It is just too hard to use the exit after work!

Mr Scappe is President of the Moon Transportation Authority. Sue I agree with you that intersection is terrible!

This is a bad intersection but if drivers actually STOPPED at the stop sign by the motel it might help a little. I actually stop there and one time (in the winter) I heard a woman screaming at me from the car behind me.

Well I think the intersection by starbucks, on Beaver Grade Road, is pretty abysmal. The light takes forever to change. And yes the Thorn Run road intersection is just plain dangerous.

Jules, you have really gone off the deep end and your obsession with Mr.Scappe is not only creepy, it's also very frightening. You need to run, not walk, to a therapist immediately! Mr.Scappe had nothing to do with the design of the Thorn Run intersection, and if you had ever bothered to watch or pay attention to a school board meeting you would know that he has been trying to secure federal funds to fix it.

If Mr Scappe is President of the Transportation Authority then I agree he should take responsibility for addressing the unsafe conditions there.

David, I agree with you. And I know from watching the meetings that he is doing whatever he can to secure the necessary federal funds for the fix. Let's hope that he is successful, because that intersection is truly the worst in Moon. Too bad the Airport Authority didn't spend their money fixing Thorn Run instead of wasting it on an unnecessary roundabout.

Every meeting Mr. Scappe has indicated that they are waiting for Federal Funds. If I remeber the funds were in place by Congressman Murphy and when the bill passed the project was cut out of the Federal budget. Mr. Scappe stated that this project is the MTA's top priority. This is not the MTA's problem. This is the Township's however the township is using the MTA to complete this work. The township needs this improvement to help bring in business to Moon which will help the tax base

Has Mr Scappe been President of the transportation authority for the past 12 years? If so, seems like enough time to address the issue. I am not sure I understand the difference between the township and MTA are they not one in the same?

My information he has not been the President the past 12 years. I do not think the intersection has been looked at fo r12 years. The MTA is different from the Township.

Coming off the Thorn Run road exit from business 60 is exhilarating. After sitting on the exit ramp in a line of only a dozen cars for 20 minutes you finally make it to the stop sign....now the fun starts! Will the cars from your right actually stop and let you pull out a little? will the cars from the left stop and wave you out?? Most likely after 5 minutes you get sick of waiting and roll the dice and just pull your car out...brakes squeal, horns honk, birds get flipped. and then whooooosh a car NOT turning from the right whizzes past you...Congratulations you successfully completed a left hand turn while dodging three different traffic flows! Now you can go to the post office and mail that letter of discontent to the township to complain that there should be a light there.

I myself find it easier and safer to just drive to University Blvd and stop at Selma's.
