Services Scheduled for Moon Area Teacher Killed in Ohio Crash

School district officials extend condolences to family of Michael Walter.

officials Monday paused for a moment of silence to remember a district science teacher killed in a weekend car crash.

Michael Walter, 34, of Beaver Falls, was killed in a two-vehicle collision at 11 a.m. Sunday in Salem, Ohio. He taught science to eighth-graders and was a football coach at Beaver Area High School.

School Board President Sandra McCurdy said the district extended condolences to Walter’s family and friends.

 “My son is in the eighth grade,” McCurdy said at last night’s board meeting. “[Monday] was a very difficult day for the students.”

Grief counseling has been made available to students and faculty.

Family and friends will be received from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Hill & Kunselman Funeral Home in Beaver Falls. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with interment following at Grandview Cemetery in Big Beaver, according to the funeral home’s obituary information.

Walter was born in 1977 in Rochester and was the son of Jerry and Elizabeth Walter, both of Beaver Falls. He graduated from Big Beaver Falls Area High School and received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Gannon University and a master’s degree in education from Slippery Rock University.

Walter and his passenger, Carie Ann Harris, 33, were killed Sunday at the intersection of Route 45 and Route 165 in Salem when an oncoming tractor-trailer struck their vehicle as it proceeded from a stop sign, according to the Ohio State Patrol.

Memorial donations can be made to the Beaver Area Quarterback Club in Beaver.
