Ribbon-Cutting Set for New Montour Athletic Center

The Montour School District will host the official opening of the new Montour Athletic Center on May 4 and 5.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Footballers basketball team will take part in dedication events for the new Montour Athletic Center.

Montour school board members voted to designate May 4 and 5 as the dates for a weekend-long opening ceremony for the $17.14 million facility, which features a 360-degree indoor-arena that seats 1,500, as well as fitness rooms and sports offices.

The Pittsburgh Steelers basketball team, a charity organization comprised of members of the Steelers' roster, will play members of the senior class and basketball team during an evening game on May 4.

Superintendent Donald Boyer said the district is now negotiating an appearance fee for the team. A cost of the event was immediately available. Boyer said the district is seeking sponsorships and donations.

In addition to a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony, the weekend will also include musical performances from student groups.

"We're expecting a lot of student involvement," Boyer said.

Construction began on the facility, located on the district's Clever Road campus, in December 2011. An opening in early 2013 was expected.
