Crews last week removed the final building left of the former West Hills Shopping Center, a vacant Sherwin-Williams store, marking another step toward the construction of a planned 150,000 square-foot Walmart in Moon.

No construction date is available for the big-box retail store, which will sit at the corner of Brodhead Road and University Boulevard.

Walmart must first receive a highway occupancy permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation before any further work can begin.

Walmart purchased land for the project in 2007.

Planners from Walmart have met with Moon Planning Director Adam McGurk to discuss the township’s building permit process.

Is Walmart a welcome addition in Moon Township? Are you looking forward to its planned opening? Tell us in the comments.

Yes! The Moon Township Walmart will be a welcome addition to the community! We've got to get rid of that ugly, terrible vacant lot in town. It's an eyesore and a blighted property.

I agree that the vacant lot is an eyesore, but I do NOT look forward to the traffic a Walmart will bring. It will not help me one bit because I refuse to shop there due to how poorly they treat their own employees. I feel something much better could go in that space much like the beautiful mixed use area they are building in South Fayette. I hope this project gets nixed!

You articulately said what I have believed for years. This is a serious misstep for Moon and I'm glad we relocated when we did!!

I don't like Walmarts, anywhere. I don't know why we need another walmart when there is one less than ten minutes away in Robinson. My concern is that this store will shut down Kmart across the street and then we will have another vacant lot to deal with.

True. If I still lived in Moon I would not shop there and would support with my dollars the local small businesses in Moon and Coraopolis.

The Kmart is really bad. it usually takes 10-15 minutes to check out when you are 3rd or 4th in line. I am not a fan of Wal-mart, but they have cheap groceries and I'm hoping it will attract other businesses to that plaza.

First off, thanks to Sherwin-Williams for holding out as long as you did at the West Hills Plaza. And Joe, don't be fooled by cheap groceries ---- there's always a price paid somewhere (i.e. tax dollars going for public assistance to WalMart employees to supplement the meager wages WalMart pays, smaller businesses getting squeezed out of the area, etc.).

True! True! True! Giant Eagle is much the same. Yes, they support schools with their computer program BUT it is the patrons of the store that pay for it through higher prices!!

I have no idea why Moon Twp is allowing this to happen when the majority of Moon residents, particularly those who will be most impacted by the traffic nightmare that will come with it, have voiced their opposition. The vacant lot should be turned into something we all could use like a park, with a pond and walking trail, perhaps a dog park that charges admission to raise money for its upkeep. The last thing people in Moon want or need is a Walmart. But it would appear our township "leaders" aren't interested in what we want or need. They've already tasted Walmart's KoolAid.

Except for Marv Eicher who has consistently tried to lead/vote in the best interests of the residents of the township. Bravo, Marv!!

M, I agree with you. Marv Eicher is the voice of reason on that panel. If the rest of the group stopped seeing dollar signs and instead concentrated on "quality of life" for those they represent, we could stop Moon from becoming fraught with chain stores and fast food restaurants. Part of the reason I love living here is because there is still that "local" quality. I fear, though, that WalMart will suck the last vestige of "localness" from our township and we will become a generic Anytown USA.
