Moon Man Charged with Theft at Abandoned Building
Moon Township Police blotter for Wednesday, July 18.
Police said a Moon Township man broke into a vacant University Boulevard hotel to steal copper piping from abandoned rooms.
Kelly James Carter, 46, has been charged with criminal trespass, criminal mischief, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property in connection to the incident, according to a police report.
Police said Carter in February broke into the hotel, which is being torn down by the Pittsburgh-based Ross Development, and used a saw to strip empty rooms of copper piping. Water was still running in the rooms at the time of the theft, causing water to flow out of rooms and damage carpeting and walls as a result of the plumbing theft.
Police did not disclose the value of the theft or water damage done in the rooms.
Carter is scheduled to appear Aug. 28 in Coraopolis District Court for a preliminary hearing.
