Four teachers will begin their official teaching roles at the Moon Area School District this fall, but for three they will be in familiar territory and all of them have prior educational experience.
Ed Elbel is the new Social Studies teacher at Moon Area High School.
Elbel graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Secondary Social Studies Education.
Barbara Thompson will be the social studies teachers at the Moon Area Middle School, but she isn’t new to the district. Thompson has served as a substitute for the district and was warmly welcomed by school principal, Melissa Heasley.
“We are so happy that she is staying with us,” said Heasley at the School Board Meeting.
Erin Berger will be a new English teacher at the high school and is also coming back to the Moon Area School District where she served as a substitute teacher at the high school.
Berger graduated from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree a double major in education and theatre.
In addition to the Moon Area School District, Berger has served as a substitute teacher at Big Beaver Falls High School and Middle School and Seneca Valley Middle School. She also performs with the Bobcat Players, a local theatre company in her hometown of Beaver.
“I am very excited to join the team at Moon Area School District,” said Berger.
Britni McGrath will be a long-term substitute math teacher at the Moon Area High School.
As a math teacher, McGrath will be teaching geometry, trigonometry /precalculus honors, and calculus.
McGrath also comes back to Moon where she held a long-term substitute position at the middle school in 2010. She has also taught at University Prep with the Pittsburgh Public Schools last year.
McGrath, who lives in the west-end area of Pittsburgh, said, “I have taught subjects ranging from 7th grade math to AP Calculus. I am very excited to continue my journey as an educator at Moon Area High School.”
