Groundbreaking for Montour Junction Athletic Complex Set for 2013

With the final parcel of land purchased for the 78-acre Montour Junction athletic complex, work is ready to begin on the long-planned county project.
Construction on the first athletic field will begin later this year, the Post-Gazette reports.
The Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority this month purchased a 1.6 acre tract of Coraopolis land from Trinity Commercial Development for $25,000, according to the report.
That purchase marks the final land acquisition needed for the long-planned project. The site will connect the trail head of the Montour Trail to the rest of the Montour Junction property.
No specific construction date was immediately available.
The sports center is designed to straddle Coraopolis, Robinson and Moon, bordered by Route 51 and the Coraopolis Bridge.
The site of the complex, a former brownfield, was owned by the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad before it was acquired by the Pittsburgh-based Sports Legacy Foundation.
The project could cost an estimated $10 to $15 million to complete, according to reports.

Key to the success of the project is an agreement by the county to make all of the fields available to the general public at least 50 percent of the time. Right now, plan is to restrict access to the fields to only organized soccer, lacrosse and rugby teams.

sure hope they put in a traffic signal for those of us who live across the road from the proposed park. if not we will be locked in, it is hard to pull out on route 51 now
