Get Out: Make it a Ghostly Weekend

Check out our spooky picks to get into the Halloween spirit this weekend and let us know about your plans.

 

It's the season of pumpkin patches, trick-or-treating and haunted houses. So dress to kill and get out this weekend to some local Halloween-themed happenings. 

 

1. HAUNTED HOUSE TOUR

When/Where:  7 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Sewickley United Methodist Church.

Why Go: Spend an evening getting the living daylights scared out of you at the SUMC haunted house. Many ghosts and ghouls had a hand in decorating this year’s spooky attraction, so don’t miss it.

Price: $5 in advance; $7 at the door.

 

2.  SILK ROAD ACROBATS

When/Where: 7 p.m. Friday at Moon Area High School, 8353 University Blvd, Moon.

Why Go: What’s Halloween without a little Candelabra Contortion? This 55-minute, high energy, family-friendly show is action-packed and tinged with danger with vignettes that can include hoop diving, plate spinning, candelabra contortion and the famous Lion Dance. Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater is bringing the Pittsburgh premiere event from China.

Price: Free.

 

3. OWL-O-WEEN AT THE AVIARY  

When/Where: 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the National Aviary, 700 Arch St., Pittsburgh.

Why Go:  The ghostly but-not-too-scary evening will include a costume contest, storytelling, crafts and photo opportunities with Barkley the Eastern screech owl. Trainers will fly the owls, and the Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches will make an appearance. Light snacks will be provided, and the café will be open for dinner. Price: members $10 adult and $8 child; non-members $13 adults and $11 child. 

4. FERN HOLLOW PUMPKIN SPOOKTACULAR

When/Where: 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Fern Hollow Nature Center, Sewickley Heights.

Why Go: Listen to spooky stories, make s’mores around the campfire and use your flashlight for a night hike in search of some nocturnal creepy crawlies, then kick back on a blanket and watch the classic film It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. S’mores and the bonfire will be provided couresy of Fern Hollow and the Sewickley Public Library. Bring refreshments.   

Price: $15 per family/$25 for non-members per family. Registration required, and space is limited. Call 412-741-6136 or email fhnc@verizon.net   

 

5. HARVEST MOON RUN

Where/When: 8:30 a.m. at St. Philip Church, 1629 Beaver Grade Road, Moon.

Why Go: It’s time for the fourth annual 10 Mile Run + 5K Run/Walk, a mix of challenging hills with mildly rolling paved roads in a race around the Cherrington Office Complex and on the roads of Moon Township.  Proceeds benefit student ministries of the church.

Price: $30 registration or $25 if no shirt option is chosen for 10-Mile Run; and $25 or $20 if no shirt option is chosen for 5K Run/Walk. Register online at www.race360.com/14346 or on the day of the race at St. Philip Church.

 

6. FALL EVENT

Where/When: 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Mary Roberts Rinehart Nature Park.

Why Go: Enjoy seasonal-themed activities such as storytelling, pumpkin painting, s’mores roasting, and buy a bag of bulbs to take home.

Price: Free.
