Company Will Conduct Seismic Testing in Moon Township

Board of supervisors also approves purchase of new equipment and the final land development plan for a planned non-residential development at Pittsburgh International Business Park.

Seitel Data Co. Ltd. of Monaca plans to conduct seismic testing in Moon Township—even though there is no Marcellus Shale drilling permitted where the testing is being done.

At its meeting last week, the Moon Township Board of Supervisors approved a request by the firm, which is headquartered in Houston, TX, to conduct a seismic survey across state, county, and local roads within a small portion of the township.

The locations, terms and conditions will be set forth in an agreement to be prepared by the township solicitor and approved by the township manager. At the board meeting in April, the firm had asked to conduct the study specifically on Spring Run Road Ext., a county road, and North Flaugherty Run Road, a township road.

The board also approved Seitel's request to place seismic boxes and geophones on the township-owned Whispering Woods Baseball Field, located just off Spring Run Road Ext. The testing is subject to an agreement in a form acceptable to the township manager and the township solictor.

Moon Township currently has no permits and no requests for Marcellus Shale drilling, according to information provided by the township. Seitel officials discussed in their presentation to the supervisors that they might be contacting private home owners in the Moon Township area.

Seitel is waiting on approval from Allegheny County to go forward with the testing on county-owned roads.

In other business last week, the board voted to:

  • Purchase a new Case 621FXT front end loader from Groff Tractor and Equipment, Inc. under Pennsylvania State Department of General Services “piggyback” purchasing program. The cost is not to exceed $127,200, including trade value. The current front end loader used by the public works department is 16 years old and would cost $15,000 for needed repairs.
  • Approve the final land development plan application for Building 210 of the Pittsburgh International Business Park planned non-residential development. The business park, owned by Allegheny County and leased by the Allegheny County Airport Authority, sits on 40 acres of land located on Cherrington Parkway Ext., adjacent to Cherrington Corporate Center.
